1. Foreword.

Today it is hard to imagine that in 1960, some 80 people, representing 70 or so organisations, met as a first step to the setting up of the New Milton & District Community Association and Community Centre. This extraordinary event took place on 20 September 1960 and was celebrated in September 2010 and now 2020.

In 1969 one of our Members, Miss M. Robinson, compiled a booklet giving the background to the formation of the New Milton & District Community Association and Community Centre. Its title was, suitably, Acorn to Sapling. Very few copies of this booklet remain today. In 2010, it was thought that future generations should be aware of our history, and an update, Acorn to Noble Oak, was published, recording the events from inception in 1960 to our fiftieth anniversary in 2010.

This booklet recorded the determination of the founders to operate without a Centre, win over the planners, raise the necessary funding and overcome objections in establishing a Temporary Centre in Station Road before purchasing the land and then building our current Centre. To celebrate the 60th Anniversary of that first meeting, we have looked back a little bit to those early days and gone on to summarise ways in which the Centre has developed since Acorn to Noble Oak was published in 2011.

The Community Centre is volunteer-led and volunteer-run. We are so grateful to our volunteers. We have tried to include the names of as many volunteers as possible and are sorry that we could not include everyone particularly our Catering Staff and Receptionists.
